Sega’s strategy game A Total War Saga: Troy will be available for free on the Epic Games Store the first day after its release on August 13. Gamers who want to get their hands on the game afterwards will have to pay. The game will only be available for purchase through Epic’s game store for a year.

It is the first time that Epic Games is giving away a game from a major publisher from the moment the game comes out. Epic probably wants to attract more users with this. The game store already regularly gives away free games to do so, but so far these have been older or smaller games, which are no longer sold for high prices.

Players who download the game within the first 24 hours will receive the game. This is not a temporary period in which the game can be played for free. It is not yet known what the game will cost after release day. The previous game in the spin-off series costs 40 euros on Steam.

“Thanks to Epic, we can give away the game for free on release day,” said publisher Sega. That seems to indicate that Epic is giving financial compensation to the publisher. Sega hopes that the action will bring more players into contact with the genre. Sega also emphasizes that only Troy will be sold in this way. Other Total War games will not land exclusively on the Epic Games Store.

A Total War Saga: Troy is being created by developer Creative Assembly. The strategy game is set around the war between the Greeks and the Trojans in the Bronze Age. Players take on roles of the Greek Achilles or Prince Hector of Troy. The game will only be available for PC and will only be available for purchase on the Epic Games Store for the first year. The game will also come to Steam and other platforms in August 2021.

It is striking that a page for the game was already online on Steam, stating that the game will be released in 2020. That may indicate that the deal with Epic Games was made later. The game was announced in September last year.
