Sega and developer Feral Interactive have announced Total War Saga: Troy. This will be the second title in the saga spin-off series within the Total War series. The release is scheduled for sometime in 2020 and the new game is set in the era of the Trojan War.

Feral Interactive writes that it was inspired by the Iliad, the ancient Greek epic about the Trojan War attributed to Homer. Set in this war between a Greek coalition and the Trojans, the game features the familiar mix of real-time battles and turn-based elements of empire building and management. Players can choose the Greek or the Trojan perspective. In Total War Saga: Troy, the developer talks about eight available iconic heroes and a character-driven, narrative drama where you have to overcome your antagonists.

In an early preview, PC Gamer writes that the Greek Achilles and the Trojan Hector will be present with special skills and equipment, among others. According to the medium, gods and a minotaur also play a role, but the historical slant predominates and the Trojan horse is missing. There are eight different factions, including several Trojan and Greek. The Trojan Prince Paris will still kidnap the Spartan Queen Helena and flee back to Troy, but how events unfold after that is entirely up to the player.

Total War Saga: Troy will be the second title within the Total War series to fall within the spin-off series, which is indicated by the addition of ‘saga’. This stands for games that, unlike the regular Total War games, zoom in on a shorter, smaller historical period with somewhat smaller, detailed campaign playing fields. Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia was the first saga title. This came out in May last year and zoomed in on the battle for the British Isles from the year 878, with the invasion of the Normans just over.

When Total War Saga: Troy will be released is not yet known, except that the title should be released sometime next year. Windows comes first, followed shortly by versions for macOS and Linux.
