‘Toshiba no longer releases new HDDs with 15,000 rpm’
Toshiba sees no point in releasing new hard drives with a speed of 15,000 rpm. Golem reports this based on conversations with the manufacturer during the Cebit. There would still be little room for the fast HDDs next to SSDs.
Currently there are still six SAS drives from Toshiba with 15,000 rpm in the Pricewatch, of which the highest storage capacity is 600 GB. Higher storage capacities are possible, Golem writes, but Toshiba does not see the point of that. Compared to SSDs, the price per gigabyte is not favorable.
As for HDDs of 10,000 rpm, there will be a new generation from Toshiba. The maximum storage capacity there is now 1.8TB and thanks to the ratio between price, storage capacity and speed, there would still be a market for these drives. The 7200rpm drives will be offered for a long time to come, it is expected. New techniques, such as the addition of helium, allow the use of more platters and thus storage capacity.
