Toshiba introduces m2 nvme ssds with 96 layer 3d tlc nand
Toshiba introduces the XG6 series of NVME SSDs with an m2 form factor, using 96-layer TLC NAND. There will be variants with a capacity of 256GB, 512GB and 1024GB.
According to Toshiba, the XG6 is the first SSD to use 96-layer Nand memory. The higher density should improve performance and could also lower costs. The new SSD is the successor to the XG5 series introduced last year, which uses 64-layer TLC-NAND.
As in the XG5, Toshiba uses its TC58NCP09GSD controller for the SSDs and that should be good for sequential read and write speeds of up to 3180 and 2960MB/s. With random read and write actions, the SSD reaches up to 355,000 and 365,000iops. The figures given presumably apply to the 1TB version of the Toshiba XG6 SSD.
The new XG6 series of SSDs uses tlc-nand, with three bits per cell. Recently Toshiba has also started making qlc-nand, with four bits per cell. In September, the company will start supplying samples of qlc-nand. Those chips also consist of 96 layers.
Toshiba does not mention recommended retail prices of the SSDs. The XG6 series will be used by builders of systems and laptops. The SSDs may also be released on the consumer market under a different name. AnandTech suggests that the XG6 series could succeed the OCZ RD400 series, which was based on the Toshiba XG3 series.
