Toshiba Introduces 2.5″ 3TB Drive
Toshiba has announced a 2.5″ HDD with four platters of 750GB each, for a total storage capacity of 3TB. In addition, the company is releasing a new SSD in which the nand controller is part of the HDD controller chip.
According to Toshiba, the 3TB capacity of the MQ03ABB is the highest of a 2.5″ drive to date. The manufacturer has used pmr technology to achieve a data density of 750GB per platter. The thickness of the drives is 15mm , the rotation speed is 5400rpm and there is a sata-600 interface.The disk has a buffer of 16MB.The power consumption during operation is 1.7W and in standby at 0.7W.The first sample deliveries will take place in May, after that mass delivery should start.Prices for the MQ03ABB are not yet known.
In addition, Toshiba comes with the MQ02ABD100H with a thickness of 9.5mm and the MQ02ABF050H with a 7mm thickness. These are 2.5″ SSDs with capacities of 1TB and 500GB respectively. The drives have 8GB nand memory and these are Toshiba’s second-generation 19nm chips. the nand controller and the hdd controller are no longer separate, but are an integrated controller-soc Both drives rotate at 5400rpm and the amount of cache is 64MB.
