Toshiba announces new HDDs with 10,000 rpm speed
Toshiba has introduced a line of hard drives for business use. The AL13SE series drives are 2.5″ drives with a SAS interface and come in four versions. The platters rotate at more than ten thousand revolutions per minute.
Toshiba goes the AL13SEseries with capacities of 300GB, 450GB, 600GB and 900GB. All four drives will have a SAS interface, good for speeds of up to 6Gbps. In order to deliver data to the interface quickly enough, the platters of the 2.5″ hard drives rotate at 10,500 rpm. In addition, the drives have 64MB cache memory. The average seek times for read and write are 3, respectively. 7 and 4.1ms.
Thanks to a modified technique for positioning the read heads, the hard disks would perform better than previous generations of drives; Toshiba claims a 32 percent faster transfer rate. The lifespan would also be 25 percent longer than that of the previous generation of drives at two million MTBF hours. The AL13SE series consumes about 2.7W at idle, 4.7W in activity. Toshiba did not disclose prices.
