Toshiba Adds 14TB HDD to Consumer X300 Line consumenten

Toshiba has added 12TB and 14TB models to both the X300 Performance and N300 NAS lines of hard drives. The hard drives are filled with helium and made up of up to nine platters.

The 12TB and 14TB HDDs come in a 3.5″ housing that is laser welded to prevent the helium from escaping. The hard drives run at 7200rpm and have a buffer of 256MB.

The throughputs of the N300 14TB drive for NAS systems are up to 260MB/s, while that of the 12TB peaks at 253MB/s. According to the manufacturer, the N300 drives are equipped with rotational vibration sensors and there is support for raid setups with up to eight HDDs. It is not yet known what the prices for the discs will be. Toshiba US reports that availability there will follow in December. It is not yet known when the drives will come to the Benelux.

These are variants of the business 14TB drives that Toshiba announced last year. Manufacturers are now working on the next step: that to 16TB. For example, Seagate announced that it had developed 16TB drives internally, using its Hamr technology.
