Torrent site What.CD stops
Popular music torrent site What.CD has shut down after French police reportedly seized 12 of the site’s servers. The site and associated irc channel are offline and it is still unknown what exactly happened.
The front page of What.CD only shows a notification. “Due to recent events, What.CD is shutting down. It’s unlikely we’ll be returning to our current form anytime soon. All site and user data has been destroyed. So long, and thanks for all the fish.”
The French magazine Zataz reports that the French police have seized servers of the site and that the site has therefore pulled the plug. The website denies via Twitter that the database was seized. The torrent site was known as a large library of both popular and more obscure music and distinguished itself, among other things, with the recommendations that users made to each other. The site had been around since 2007 and grew out of Oink, a similar service, which had been in existence since 2004.
