Tor project charges for ‘revenge porn’ dropped

The lawsuit filed against Tor for facilitating illegal pornographic material has been dropped by the prosecution. Instead, the prosecution is targeting the providers of the ‘revenge porn’.

The lawyer who previously filed a lawsuit against Tor on behalf of a Texas woman for facilitating “revenge porn” on the Pinkmeth.com website, has also withdrawn the case. Jason L. Van Dyke posted on Twitter details of a so-called partial nonsuit, releasing Tor from further charges. According to Van Dyke, all arrows are aimed at pinkmeth.com in the lawsuit.

The pornographic website, on which material is usually uploaded without permission from the persons depicted in the images, can only be accessed through Tor. According to the original indictment, developers working at The Tor Project are complicit in allowing Pinkmeth to operate anonymously on the ‘dark net’ and allow users to anonymously upload prohibited content.

Van Dyke withdrew the charges just days after it was filed. It’s not clear why the Tor project no longer needs to stand trial: the lawyer gave no argument.
