TopJohnWu releases Magisk 24 release version with Android 12 support
Magisk, the Android software that allows root access, has received a new release version. Version 24 supports Android 12, but lacks MagiskHide and the built-in repo for Magisk modules.
It’s not the very first version of Magisk to run on Android 12; in October of last year a canary version of the software was already available for download. In this case it is a stable version of Magisk, said Wu on Twitter† That means users can expect far fewer bugs than with that previous version. Shortly after the release of version 24, 24.1 was also released, with some minor fixes.
Like that canary version, this version no longer has MagiskHide on board. TopJohnWu says he is no longer interested in developing it and points out that alternatives to this have become ‘much better than MagiskHide’ in recent months. Also, he now works for the Android Platform Security team, which would constitute a conflict of interest in that area. Hide Root is necessary for certain apps to work that normally won’t work on a rooted phone, such as Pokemon GO, Snapchat, and Android Pay.
The shutdown of the repo for modules was also known since the canary release. Wu says he has no more time to maintain this part of Magisk. Users will have to download modules themselves and manually flash them within Magisk Manager.
New in version 24 is Zygisk, Magisk in Zygote, a process within Android that enables shared code between processes. Wu says he “can’t wait to see what module developers will do with it.”
