Top man: Instagram will merge all video formats in Reels next year
Next year, Instagram will merge all video formats, so video messages, Reels, Stories and the former IGTV, into the short-form video format Reels. Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri said this in a video to users.
In the video to users, who Mosseri include posted on Twitter, he says that the company will continue to focus on video in the coming year. In July, he said in a similar video that Instagram is no longer a photo-sharing app and that the social medium would focus on video. In 2022, the focus will be on this again.
Mosseri says the main priority for the social medium in 2022 will be to “consolidate” all video forms currently on Instagram around Reels. Reels is a feature similar to TikTok where users post short videos. Reels was already given a central place in the Instagram app in 2021. Mosseri says Instagram is once again committed to growing Reels as a product.
In addition, Instagram will focus on improving Messenger in 2022. According to Mosseri, it has “become clear” that messaging is the main way for friends to meet online. That is why Instagram is going to expand the messaging service in the app next year to make it easier to send messages to others.
Mosseri also says that Instagram plans to work on transparency in the coming year. “People need to understand how Instagram works,” he says. Mosseri does not say how Instagram will do that. Finally, Instagram will “introduce new ways” for creators to earn money through the app.
