Tokina Announces Lenses for Sony, Nikon, Canon and Fujifilm Cameras

Tokina shows a roadmap with new lenses for cameras from Sony, Nikon, Canon and Fujifilm. This mainly concerns relatively bright prime lenses, with a fixed focal length, but also a zoom lens for Nikon and Canon DSLRs.

Tokina indicates that it had wanted to present the new lenses during CP+2020 in Yokohama, Japan, but that photo fair was canceled due to concerns about the corona virus. That is why the manufacturer still presents the new lenses that it will release this year.

For SLRs with Nikon’s F and Canon’s EF mount and aps-c sensors, Tokina will release an 11-20mm f/2.8 lens in the summer. It is a successor to the 11-16 mm f/2.8 that the manufacturer has had in its range for those cameras for years.

The remaining lenses are for mirrorless system cameras, including primes for Sony’s E-mount with focal lengths of 23, 33, and 56mm and an aperture of f/1.4. Exactly the same lenses are also available for the Fujifilm X mount. The versions for Sony cameras should be released in the summer and those for Fujifilm in the fall.

In addition, Tokina is releasing a 35mm f/1.8 and a 50mm f/1.8 lens for Sony’s FE mount, which are scheduled for release in the fall of this year. These lenses are suitable for cameras with a full-frame sensor, such as the Sony A7 and A9 series models, but can also be used on cameras with an aps-c sensor.

Tokina has not yet announced prices. The arrival of the aps-c lenses is not a complete surprise, as Viltrox announced identical-looking lenses on paper last year, according to a message on FujiFumors. The comparable rumor site SonyAlphaRumors seems to suggest that these are exactly the same designs, partly because Viltrox and Tokina are more likely to use the same optical designs, such as with the 85mm f/1.8 lens for Sony’s FE mount.
