Starfield gets a story expansion every year via DLC. Todd Howard said this during an interview with YouTuber MrMattyPlays. Bethesda already has plans for the next expansion of the game. It is not clear how long the extensions will continue to be made.

Howard says he does not yet know to what extent the loose ends from the game will be tied together. The man also could not say whether Bethesda will use the DLCs to add new gameplay elements to the game.

Howard said during the interview with MrMattyPlays also that Starfield can count on approximately 14 million players. In December last year, that number was reportedly around 13 million. The average playing time would be approximately 40 hours per player. Bethesda's CEO also returned to the criticism the game had received regarding its traversal through the game world. “During development, we put a lot of thought into how we can make exploration fun on large, barren planets,” he said. “We felt we made the right decision, but we also knew we wouldn't meet everyone's expectations.”

Bethesda shared new images of Starfield: Shattered Space in June. This is an expansion with a new storyline, a new planet, new weapons and new in-game equipment, which should be released later this year. It is not clear when exactly. Bethesda has also released a separate update with mod support for Starfield.
