Tobii Negotiates with Sony to Provide Eye Tracking for PSVR2
Tobii is in negotiations with Sony to integrate eye tracking technology into the upcoming PlayStation VR2 headset. The developer of the tracking technology cannot yet comment on the financial side of the potential deal.
Tobii makes it clear in the announcement that the tech company is still in negotiations with Sony and specifically mentions the eye tracking technology for the PlayStation VR2. Sony already announced when the PlayStation VR2 was announced that the VR headset would get eye tracking, but did not yet release any details about the underlying software. It is already known that eye tracking is used to control a game and to apply foveated rendering. In this technique, a game renders the user’s periphery at a lower quality to reduce the workload on a system.
The Swedish company Tobii is a standalone supplier of proprietary eye tracking technologies. The company has developed a variety of eye tracking applications for healthcare, automotive and gaming, among others. For example, Tobii already entered into partnerships with Qualcomm to supply eye tracking software and released his own Eye Tracker.
