Titanfall 2 PC version gets support for adaptive resolution scaling
Respawn Entertainment has released a patch for the PC version of Titanfall 2, which adds support for adaptive resolution scaling. This technique is also used with consoles and adjusts the resolution when the frame rate drops.
The new option should ensure that gamers with less powerful hardware, or with, for example, a combination of a 4k monitor with a midrange GPU, can play Titanfall 2 with a constant frame rate. According to Respawn Entertainment, adaptive resolution scaling only works when tsaa is enabled.
Tsaa is an anti-aliasing solution that the developer claims is twice as fast as 2x msaa and better at removing jaggies from the image. Tsaa does make the image a little less sharp, DSOgaming noted in an analysis of the PC version of Titanfall 2.
Respawn does warn that if users set a resolution or target frame rate that is much higher than what their machine can handle, the image quality will be greatly reduced. The resolution will then be continuously adjusted downwards to maintain the performance level. All systems are different, so users should try for themselves which setting works best for their configuration, the developer says.
Adjusting the resolution while playing a game has been used on consoles for some time. With PC games, the option is usually not present.
Titanfall 2 v2.0.0.7 also includes other improvements. For example, the developer promises improved stability and performance, fewer stutters when using voice chat and less delays when streaming textures. The full release notes of the update can be found on the Titanfall forum.
