TikTok owner ByteDance releases music streaming service in India
ByteDance, the Chinese company behind social medium TikTok, has released its music streaming service Resso in India. Resso aims to differentiate itself from the competition by encouraging users to share music and lyrics.
Resso users should be able to share the music, along with lyrics and responses to it, claims Techcrunch. Moreover, it wants to distinguish itself with playlists sorted by genre. Resso does not have a complete music catalog, because Universal music is missing. Universal is one of the largest record labels in the world. It’s unknown why that music is missing, but it could be because ByteDance is a competitor of Tencent. Tencent has a stake in Universal.
ByteDance has targeted Resso at the Indian market and has already been testing the app for the past few months. The app has been downloaded a million times, according to data that Techcrunch received from analysis company Sensor Tower; 600,000 times in India and 400,000 times in Indonesia. Resso is free to use with ads, but there is also a paid version. The price is in line with what major competitors such as Spotify and Apple Music charge for the paid version.
