‘Tickrate multiplayer Black Ops 4 outside battle royale increased to 62Hz’
According to a user’s tests on Reddit, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s multiplayer tickrate has been increased from 20Hz to 62Hz. This apparently does not apply to the battle royale mode Blackout, which still runs at 20Hz.
The testing was conducted by user Soya92 of /r/Blackops4, who reports the upgrade on both the Windows and PS4 versions. A week ago it turned out that the refresh rate compared to the beta of the game had been reduced from 60Hz to 20Hz. Developer Treyarch didn’t specifically comment on the tick rate, but said in a response that updates that “improve the experience” in terms of network performance are in the works. Players complain about the low tick rate.
A lower tick rate means that updates between clients and server are sent less often per second. This allows the parties to have a slightly different view of a battlefield; one player has already dived behind a wall and the other player still just has him in sight and fires a shot, for example. The server then has to choose a side and in the eyes of one of the players will incorrectly communicate a miss or a hit.
Tickrate is often an issue in multiplayer games. Overwatch now runs at 63Hz but it used to be lower, Destiny 2 runs at 30Hz and Fortnite at 30Hz. With PUBG, the weather depends on how many players are left, with a maximum of 60Hz.
