Third Torchlight game will not be mmorpg, but arpg like its predecessors
Echtra Games, the new developer behind the Torchlight franchise, isn’t going to make the latest game for free mmorpg after all. The studio wants to make more of a game like the Diablo-esque Torchlight and Torchlight II. That’s why the game is also renamed Torchlight III.
The game was first called Torchlight Frontiers and would take place in a world that players share with other players. However, now the game is going back to its roots, and thus more similar to part 1 and 2. That is, the game will be a one-time purchase where players get all the content of the game.
According to Max Schaefer, current head of the franchise, alpha testers have given the studio this feedback, but that “the game itself has also let us know what it wants to be, and it wants to be Torchlight III.” As a result, the game’s structure has been completely overhauled.
Torchlight came from Runic Games, which released parts 1 and 2 in 2009 and 2012. However, it closed its doors in 2017. The torch has been taken over by Echtra Games, led by Diablo and Blizzard veteran Max Schaefer. Torchlight 3 will be released for PC in 2020, but when exactly is not yet known.
