Thecus releases new five-bay NAS

Network storage manufacturer Thecus has released a new Linux NAS, the Thecus N5810, with five bays. The smb tower is similar to the Thecus N5810Pro, but has no built-in ups. The NAS should be available from the end of November.

The Thecus N5810 is powered by an Intel Celeron J1900 quad-core processor, clocked at 2GHz. The internal memory consists of 4GB DDR3 RAM as standard, but can be expanded up to 8GB. The whole thing runs on its own embedded Linux variant Thecus OS5, including the Kodi media player, a VPN server and disk clone and wipe options. Media files can also be sent directly to monitors or other compatible equipment via the HDMI output. Various media can also be streamed to different devices via the Plex Media Server.

In addition to the HDMI port, the device has two gigabit network ports that can be combined via link aggregation, three USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 interfaces. In addition to the LCD for status information, there are four buttons on the front to operate the NAS. Furthermore, the NAS has a line-out for mini-jack. The maximum achievable read and write speeds over the network, when both gigabit LAN ports are connected, are 213MB/s for reading and 186MB/s for writing, respectively.

The NAS supports raid modes 0, 1, 5, 6, 10 and jbod, can encrypt data with aes256, and has a built-in ftp server and print server. Backups to the NAS can be made via Acronis True Image, Data Burn, Time Machine and DataGuard. Backing up to online services such as Dropbox, ElephantDriver and Amazon is also possible.

The Thecus N5810 should be available from the end of November and will cost $579. Euro prices are not yet known.
