The Verge: Google is working on AR glasses that should be released in 2024
Google is building an AR headset. That writes The Verge who could speak to two sources. The headset is known internally as Project Iris and is said to have two cameras and a custom Google chip. Google hopes to release the glasses in 2024.
The two sources who were able to speak to journalists from The Verge wished to remain anonymous but were able to say that the AR headset is still in early development. The headset is said to have two cameras that, like most existing AR headsets, record images of the outside world and transmit them to a built-in screen.
According to the sources, the headset contains a modified Google processor and would run on Android, although it is not clear whether it is about the ‘innovative’ AR operating system that Google has recently been working on and is looking for new employees. The graphic elements would then be rendered on a device other than the headset and then forwarded to the glasses. The Verge suggests that Google wants to use its data centers and the internet connection of the headset for this.
The core team working on the AR headset is said to have about 300 employees, including some members of the Pixel division. The team is headed by Clay Bavor, the vice president of Google Labs, according to sources. Bavor previously headed Google’s AR and VR division and collaborated on Daydream, a former VR platform, and Google Cardboard, according to The Verge. Bavor also led the development of Project Starline. This video connection setup uses multiple cameras to create a 3D model of users, making video calling more realistic. According to the sources, Google hopes to launch Project Starline along with the AR headset in 2024.
In addition to Google, Apple is also said to be working on an AR headset. However, according to Bloomberg, the Cupertino company postponed its development due to development issues.
