The most important CES news at a glance

CES is now over, the show floor is closed and our editors are back home. So much has been announced in the past week that it was difficult to keep up with everything. That is why we are publishing an overview with some highlights of the Consumer Electronics Show 2020.

Televisions

LG’s rollable OLED TVtv

Over the past week, manufacturers have introduced a whole range of new televisions. For example, LG is showing its OLED televisions for 2020, including a cheaper 48″ model, a set of 8k televisions and, just like last year, a rollable screen. Samsung in turn introduced an 8k television with virtually no screen edges. Other manufacturers also showed also new OLED televisions, including Sony with a 48 “model and Panasonic with its HZ2000, which, according to the manufacturer, should also offer good and clear images during the day.

Processors

The NUC 9 Extreme

During CES, a lot of new laptop processors were announced for 2020. For example, AMD comes with its Ryzen 4000 series for laptops, which are made on a 7nm process and come with up to eight cores. Intel will also show its new Tiger Lake processors with an integrated Xe GPU and will soon start supplying Core H octacores, the most powerful models of which can run at more than 5GHz. AMD will release its Threadripper 3990X CPU with 64 cores and 128 threads in February.

laptops

The foldable ThinkPad X1

In terms of laptops, there was a lot to see in Vegas; For example, Lenovo showed a Yoga laptop with Qualcomm’s ARM soc and a ThinkPad with folding OLED screen. Intel and Dell also went for foldable panels. Furthermore, some laptops with new Ryzen CPUs were shown, and some manufacturers announced laptop screens with an aspect ratio of 3:2.

Video cards

The Intel DG1 GPU

Not so many video cards were shown at CES this year. AMD did come up with an RX 5600XT, which is based on the more expensive RX 5700 video card, but offers less memory and lower clock speeds. Intel has also shown a prototype of its DG1 video card; this was the first look at one of the first separate Intel graphics cards. Furthermore, AMD confirms that a high-end Navi GPU is on the way, and EVGA showed a cheaper RTX 2060.

Smartphones

The OnePlus Concept One

Motorola offered a look at its foldable Razr phone this year, Samsung introduced its somewhat confusing Galaxy S10 and Note 10 Lite, and OnePlus unveiled its vision for the smartphone of the future. In addition, new developments regarding 5g smartphones were shared, and HiSense demonstrated a smartphone with a colored E Ink screen.

Monitor

The ROG Swift 360 with 360Hz

Last year the single screens with mini LED backlight were shown at CES, and this year such screens have been put in the spotlight again. Asus and Dell, among others, came up with mini LED monitors, both with high DisplayHDR certifications. Manufacturers also come with predominantly large monitors, and Asus announced a screen with a refresh rate of 360Hz. AMD overhauled its FreeSync standard and Cooler Master made its debut in the monitor market. Samsung also showed its Odyssey gaming monitor with a screen diagonal of 49″ and a screen curvature of 1000R.

computer stuff

The Alienware Concept UFO

As is often the case during CES, there were a number of announcements that are more difficult to put into a category. For example, Alienware showed a Nintendo Switch-esque Windows 10 handheld. In addition, the first next-gen PCI-e 4.0 SSDs were shown with speeds approaching or even exceeding the 7GB/s limit, and chassis and desktops based on Intel NUC 9 Compute Element cards were announced. These are PCI-e cards with processor, chipset, memory and I/O. In addition, manufacturers came up with new power supplies, housings and processor coolers.

Network and smart home

Philips Hue bulbs from Signify

CES 2020 was largely dominated by Wi-Fi 6 with the announcement of multiple 802.11ax routers or mesh routers. In the meantime, the first manufacturers are already working on an expansion to WiFi 6: Broadcom showed its first chipsets for WiFi 6e, with which wireless internet on the 6GHz frequency is in sight. In addition, companies showcased new smart home equipment, including new smart lighting from LIFX and Signify.

Automotive

The Sony Vision S car

Several developments in the automotive field were shown during the CES. For example, Sony showed a prototype of an electric car, although this Vision S car will not actually come on the market. Bosch also introduced a relatively affordable lidar for self-driving cars. Qualcomm is also working on autonomous vehicles; the company is working on a platform for such cars. Furthermore, Aston Martin introduces a new interior mirror on which three camera feeds can be displayed.

Other

The Nikon D780

Of course, there was a lot more to see at CES in Las Vegas. For example, SLR cameras turned out to be very much alive with new high-end models from Nikon and Canon. Panasonic also showed VR glasses with OLED screens and HDR support, which would not have a screen-door effect.
