The Last of Us Part II wins Game of The Year prize at The Game Awards

The Last of Us Part II received the game of the year award at this year’s Game Awards. The game beat the Final Fantasy VII Remake, Ghost of Tsushima, Hades and Half-Life: Alyx in that category. In addition, the game won six more prizes.

TLoU Part II is also the winner in the Game Direction, Narrative, Audio Design, Performance by an Actor, Innovation in Accessibility and Action / Adventure categories. There are 26 categories in total. The awards were presented by a jury consisting of people who work at 95 different media companies. The votes of the public counted for ten percent and that of the jury for 90 percent. Exceptions to this are the Most Anticipated Game and Player’s Voice prizes.

Hades, Ghost of Tsushima, Among Us and Final Fantasy VII Remake also won a multitude of prizes; all two. Hades won the award for best indie game and action game, and Final Fantasy took home the awards for best soundtrack and best role-playing game. The prize for the best Art Direction and Player’s Voice went to Ghost of Tsushima. Among Us was considered the best mobile game and multiplayer game.

Tell Me Why, from the makers of Life is Strange, received the Games For Impact prize. This is awarded to games with a ‘message that makes the player think’ and ‘has a pro-social message’. It defeated If Found …, Kentucky Route Zero and Spiritfarer, among others.

No Man’s Sky is the best Ongoing Game; a game that is therefore constantly being developed. In it, it defeated Apex Legends, Destiny 2, CoD: Warzone, and Fortnite. The game has received a total of 17 major updates since its release in 2016, while the game is still available for a one-time payment. The major updates are free.

Half-Life: Alyx took the prize for best vr / ar game. Valve’s game beat Dreams, Iron Man VR, Star Wars Squadrons and The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners. Furthermore, Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate Edition was the best fighting game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons the best Family title, the best simulator & strategy game award went to Microsoft Flight Simulator, the best sports game is Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, is Phantasmobia the best debut game. According to the public, the most anticipated game is Elden Ring, the next game from FromSoftware.

The ceremony will also show new images of already announced games, as well as completely new games. Those new announcements included Perfect Dark, a new Ark, another Mass Effect, and more games. These are shown alternately with the award ceremonies. New images were included from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Disco Elysium, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Fall Guys, Super Meat Boy Forever, OddWorld: Soulstorm, Among Us, Dragon Age 4, and Fortnite.
