The Creative Assembly reveals the size of the Thrones of Britannia campaign map
Developer The Creative Assembly has revealed the size of the campaign map for the upcoming game Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia. The British Isles are comparable in size to the entire campaign map from Total War: Attila.
The campaign map in Total War: Attila covers a large part of Europe, of which the British Isles are only a small part. Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia focuses specifically on the British Isles. Compared to Attila, the British Isles are 23 times larger, according to the developer. According to the developer, this results in the most detailed ever made for a Total War game. There is a multitude of different factions and areas to conquer. In Ireland alone, there are about fifteen different factions.
As in Warhammer and Attila, provinces are formed by several regions, but there is a difference with the use of settlements. Provincial capitals still have room for six buildings, troops, and walls, but settlements don’t; they only have room for two specific, predefined building types. This means that most of the buildings important to the economy are not protected by the walled capital. This creates new opportunities for attackers. For example, the farms can be attacked to create food shortages, or a small settlement can be attacked to force the bulk of the enemy troops to leave their capital fortress.
A few weeks ago, The Creative Assembly announced the new title in the Total War series. Thrones of Britannia, in fact, covers the same historical period that was central to the 2003 expansion Medieval: Total War Viking Invasion, in which the player had to invade Britain with Normans. It’s 878 and there’s no end time set, but the game goes back approximately to the year 1066. It revolves around the battle between the various British kingdoms at the time. The engine of Thrones of Britannia is based on that of Total War: Attila.
Thrones of Britannia is the first spin-off to be developed by The Creative Assembly. The word ‘saga’ in the title refers to this spin-off series, which, according to the developer, no longer focuses on a large historical period as before, but focuses more on shorter periods in which the battle could have ended in all kinds of ways. That should lead to very detailed campaigns, with a lot of emphasis on the culture and better developed storylines and characters.
There is a page on Steam for Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia, but apart from a trailer, some screenshots and a short description, there is little information yet. The game should be released in 2018, but when exactly is unclear. In the spring of 2018, the maker wants to show gameplay images.
