Griff Griffin, a gamer and copywriter at game developer Frontier, played the recently released action RPG The Ascent in first-person perspective by unlocking the camera. That is striking, because the game normally has an isometric perspective.

Griffin posted the first-person gameplay video to his own YouTube channel. He also explains how he adapted this camera perspective. For this, Griffin used a tool called Universal Unreal Engine 4 Unlocker. This program must be opened while running the PC version of The Ascent, after which all kinds of commands can be entered in a console window, including the use of a free camera.

From the first person perspective, the detailed, colorful and futuristic world comes to life perhaps even more than when using the normal, isometric perspective. The Ascent is set on Veles, a cyberpunk world run by The Ascent Group. That is a mega company that owns almost everything. Players assume the role of an employee, but then the company suddenly stops its activities. The game can be played solo or in co-op with up to three other players.

The Ascent was created by a Swedish indie studio with twelve employees. It’s the studio’s first title, though it does feature some veterans of the gaming industry who previously worked on games in the Wolfenstein and Gears of War game series. The game is available at Steam and for the various Xbox consoles. On the Xbox Series X, the game runs in 4k resolution in combination with a frame rate of 60fps. The game costs thirty euros and is part of the Xbox Game Pass subscription.
