Tesla wants to produce battery packs for home electricity storage
Tesla has a design ready for a battery pack that is intended to temporarily store electricity in a household. The battery pack could serve to store electricity generated by solar energy.
Tesla’s plans were outlined by CEO Elon Musk during a meeting with shareholders, Bloomberg reports. According to Musk, Tesla has a design for a battery pack for home use. Production could start within six months. Tesla has not yet provided details, such as battery capacity, but the battery pack could be based on the battery design found in the Model S.
According to many analysts, battery packs for the temporary storage of electricity in households have a bright future due to the rapid rise of solar energy in the United States, among others. The battery packs make it possible to be wholly or largely independent of a conventional energy supplier. Tesla, together with SolarCity, is already supplying some consumers with storage systems that will be installed complete with solar panels, while Tesla is also using large battery packs for its own charging stations. The company is also working on a huge factory where it plans to produce lithium-ion batteries on a large scale from 2017.
