Tesla stops deliveries of cheapest 75kWh variant of Model S and X
According to Tesla foreman Elon Musk, the configurations of the Model S and X with the 75kWh battery will be discontinued. With the Model S and X, only the more expensive version with the 100 kWh battery is available for the time being. This makes the two models about 20,000 euros more expensive.
If you want a Model X or Model S with a 75kWh battery, you must order it before Sunday evening, says Musk. If nothing else changes, the price of the cheapest Model X in the Benelux will go from 99,000 to 117,000 euros, while the Model S goes from 91,000 to 113,000 euros. Tesla regularly adjusts prices and battery configurations, so the actual impact of the move is not yet known.
The Model 3 also uses a 75 kWh battery in the most expensive configuration, but that is a physically different battery with cells of a different size, Teslarati discovered two years ago. The Model S and X will remain in the range, Musk says. The Model 3 has been on sale since last year and European customers are expected to receive the first copies in March. The Model S and X have been on the market for years.
It is speculated that this change is related to a future upgrade of the Model S and X. These would then be equipped with the new 2170 battery cells instead of the current 18650. The new cells offer higher energy density and are already being used in the Model 3.
