Tesla roof tiles with solar panels can be ordered in the US from April
Tesla’s roof tiles with integrated solar panels will be available to order from Tesla subsidiary SolarCity in the United States from April. Elon Musk makes this known in a comment on Twitter.
Almost nothing is known about availability outside the United States. It is plausible that Musk in his tweet referred to the US market. In addition, SolarCity has itself informed interested parties in tweets that nothing is yet planned for Sweden and Canada. All countries except the US will probably have to wait longer for Tesla’s special roof tiles.
Musk unveiled the roof tiles in October of last year. The roof tile is made of quartz, which should give it a ‘quasi-infinite’ life, according to Musk. The roof tile is transparent to allow sunlight to penetrate to the solar cell on the inside, but a user can only see that if he looks straight at it. From other angles, the roof tiles should resemble regular ones. The system is also compatible with Tesla’s Powerwall home batteries. Excess solar energy can be stored in it.
Musk promised that building such a solar roof should be cheaper than building a conventional roof with solar panels. However, no prices are known at this time.
