Automaker Tesla has produced more than three million cars to date. That says CEO Elon Musk in a Twitter message, in which the CEO also writes that the Tesla factory in Shanghai has now produced more than a million cars.

“Congratulations to the Giga[fabriek] in Shanghai to make the millionth car”, Musk writes on Twitter. According to him, “the total number of Teslas made is now more than three million.” In July Musk wrote that Tesla Fremont and the Gigafactory in Nevada have produced a total of two million cars. The company also has plants in Texas and Berlin, but Musk previously said production there is having a slow start and are currently ‘giant money-burners’.

Musk’s message follows a period when production from Shanghai became more difficult. The Tesla factory in Shanghai opened in 2019 and has expanded since then. In April, the factory was shut down for several weeks due to lockdowns due to a new corona wave in China. Later, the company was able to partially resume production there with a closed loop system, in which employees slept in the factory. The factory has been running at full power since Junealthough the factory still temporarily down due to upgrades.

Tesla announced earlier this month that it delivered 254,695 vehicles last quarter. In all of 2021, Tesla delivered 936,172 cars, a record for the company and 87 percent more than in 2020. The figures show that Tesla is still a relatively small car manufacturer in terms of production numbers. For example, Toyota, the largest automaker in the world, delivered 9.6 million vehicles last year.

Update, Thursday: The article added that production at the Tesla Gigafactory in Shanghai was recently halted due to factory upgrades. Thanks to Mikee368.
