Tesla has installed a battery system in Australia with a capacity of 100MW and a capacity of 129MWh. Tesla founder Elon Musk has won a bet with this: he claimed to be able to finish the battery within 100 days.

The lithium-ion battery is the largest in the world with its capacity. It is linked to the Hornsdale Wind Farm near Jamestown in the state of South Australia. This wind farm produces 315MW. The battery installation stores excess energy, which can be released to the network during peaks in demand. With a capacity of 100MW, the installation could supply 30,000 households simultaneously with energy, according to Tesla. According to Nikkei, Tesla uses battery cells from Samsung SDI.

Tesla signed the contract for the construction on September 29, with Elon Musk promising that the Tesla Powerpacks system would be ready within 100 days. If not, South Australia would not have to pay for the project, with which Tesla would lose a claimed 42 million euros.

The project is part of the plan to make the energy network in South Australia more stable. In September 2016, that region was hit by a storm and damage to the infrastructure left almost the entire state without power. Due to the strong wind, 20MW of wind energy was disconnected.

Musk congratulated the Tesla installation team and the South Australian authorities. The Prime Minister of South Australia reports that the backup will be turned on in the coming days for testing.
