Tesla cancels Model S Plaid+ version with a range of 840 kilometers
Tesla is not taking the Plaid+ version of the Model S into production after all. This model would become the top model in the Model S range, with a range of more than 840 kilometers and a power of more than 1100 hp. Tesla showed this version in January.
CEO Elon Musk writes on Twitter that the Plaid+ has been scrapped because this model is ‘not necessary’. The regular Plaid version would be ‘good enough’. Musk does not further explain why the model is being scrapped.
The Model S Plaid and Plaid + versions were announced in January with the facelift of the Model S. The Plaid variant is a more powerful version of the standard Long Range version, the Plaid + should have been the top model within the Model S again range. The Plaid + version would cost 139,990 euros, have a power of 810 kW or more than 1100 hp and have a range of more than 840 kilometers. It was not clear with which standard Tesla had measured this range; presumably it was the EPA standard, which often gives higher figures than the WLTP standard used in Europe.
The regular Plaid version costs 119,990 euros, has a power of 750kW or 1020 hp and an estimated range of 628 kilometers. This model sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.1 seconds, the Plaid + should have been able to do this even faster. Musk writes on Twitter that the Plaid will still be the fastest production car ever made, based on that sprint.
The Plaid+ was no longer available to order via Tesla’s site. It is unclear what Tesla will do with the ordered Plaid+ models. This model would go into production in the middle of next year. The Model S Plaid ships in the United States starting June 10.
