Chinese tech giant Tencent wants to gain a foothold in the games market in the US and Europe by making games featuring Nintendo characters. The company is already working with Nintendo in China; whether and when such games will come is not yet known.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Tencent wants to learn “the essence of making console games” from Nintendo. An employee of the company tells the newspaper that the goal is to make games with Nintendo characters, in order to reach console gamers in Europe and the US. It is not yet clear for which consoles Tencent wants to develop these games.

It is also unknown whether Tencent is already in talks with Nintendo to request permission for such games. Nintendo is not generous with the rights to use its intellectual property. However, there is already a collaboration between Tencent and Nintendo in China. The Chinese tech company will help bring the Switch to market there. That is difficult in China, because there is a lot of regulation regarding games and consoles.

Tencent is one of the world’s largest tech companies and also invests heavily in games. In Asia, the company has numerous mobile games with hundreds of millions of users. Tencent is also the owner of Riot Games, the creator of League of Legends. The company also owns shares of Epic Games, Activision Blizzard and Ubisoft.
