Tencent Announces Mobile Version of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds
The Chinese Tencent announces that developer Bluehole is working on a mobile version of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. The game will be released for Android and iOS and development is going smoothly, according to Tencent. The game seems to be only aimed at the Chinese market for now.
In the announcement of Tencent, the Chinese internet giant does not make it clear when the mobile variant of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds will appear on the market. However, the publisher states that the development is going ‘smoothly’. Tencent reports that it hopes to capture as much of the PC game experience as possible in the mobile version. Furthermore, the publisher states that the mobile version must comply with the same regulations as the version for PC and consoles.
The latter may be a reference to the objections the China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association expressed against the game in October. The government watchdog stated in October that the game deviates too much from socialist values and is harmful to young players, and should not be sold in China because of too much violence and blood. However, it has not yet led to a real ban. To deal with criticism from the Chinese government, Tencent previously announced a number of games that are very similar to PUBG.
Almost simultaneously with the announcement of the mobile version of PUBG, Tencent announced the game Europa, a shooter in which 100 players compete against each other until only one remains. As with the mobile version of PUBG, Tencent does not explicitly mention it, but both games seem to be aimed only at the Chinese market. Earlier this month, Tencent also introduced Glorious Mission, a mobile game whose setup is also very similar to that of PUBG. The announcement of a beta test of the game attracted almost a million interested people in a short time.
Tencent’s interest in PUBG is not surprising, given the large number of players in China. Where the interest in the shooter is declining in the rest of the world, grows the number of players in China still. With over 6 million active players, the Chinese even make up the vast majority.
