Tencent adjusts app that gave Chinese people a chance to play banned games
Chinese tech giant Tencent is going to adapt an app that gives Chinese users the chance to play games that are not allowed in the country. The app allowed Chinese gamers to contact foreign servers.
Tencent will change the app, which is officially intended to improve the connection with servers, on May 31 so that it only works with Chinese servers, reports Reuters. As a result, Chinese gamers can no longer access foreign servers of games that are not allowed in China. Chinese gamers played GTA and Animal Crossing via the speed booster app, among others.
It is unknown why Tencent is making the move. It has been known for several years that such speed boosters, which other companies also make, are also used to play banned games. The Chinese government only allows some games. The Chinese market is the largest market for game companies. Tencent’s speed booster came out in 2018.
