Telenet loses 21,000 TV subscribers in a quarter
Telenet has seen 21,200 customers leave its cable television service in the first quarter of this year. The telecom company has been losing subscribers to its TV service for some time and expects further declines, mainly due to increased competition in the market.
Telenet already lost TV customers throughout 2016, but the decline in the first quarter of 2017 with 21,200 customers was the strongest to date. In total, the company now has 2 million TV customers, more than 40,000 fewer than in the same period last year. For the first time, the number of customers for comprehensive digital TV services such as Play More declined. That number grew throughout 2016, but 5300 viewers left last quarter. Telenet attributes the negative figures to an ‘intensely competitive environment’ and price increases.
Telenet was able to add 6,400 broadband and 43,000 mobile customers and the company also earned more per customer: 54.4 euros per month compared to 52.30 euros last year. This ensured that turnover increased by 11 percent to 616 million euros, while net profit amounted to 65.8 million euros. Last year there was still a loss of 8.6 million euros.
