Telegram reports that it has reached the milestone of 400 million monthly active users. A year ago, that number was 300 million. This year, the service will focus on secure video calls for groups.

According to Telegram, 1.5 million users create a new account every day. Last year the counter stood at 300 million monthly active users, in March 2018 that was 200 million and in February 2016 the number of users touched 100 million. The messaging app was founded in 2013. According to Statista, Telegram is the sixth most popular chat app worldwide, after WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, WeChat, Tencent QQMobile and Snapchat.

Telegram reports that the global lockdown measures have shown the need for a confidential video communication tool, so the development team is focusing this year on making secure group video calls. Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet seem to be mainly benefiting from the increase in video calling, but more services are expanding their video functionality, including WhatsApp and Google Duo.
