Messaging service Telegram has seen the number of active users grow to 62 million. In addition, 2 billion messages are processed daily, a doubling compared to the number of messages sent via Telegram in December.

Techcrunch reports the numbers, which the site received from Pavel Durov, one of the founders of the messaging service. The ‘WhatsApp competitor’ appears to be growing steadily: in December last year a number of active users was mentioned of 50 million, compared to 62 million now who use the messaging service at least once a month. According to Durov, about 220,000 new Telegram users are added every day, compared to 145,000 in December.

Despite the growth of Telegram, the messaging service still lags far behind WhatsApp, the most popular messaging service. WhatsApp states that it has more than 800 million active users worldwide. Telegram did take advantage of the fact that Facebook took over WhatsApp last year: the number of Telegram users grew significantly in a short time.
