Technician uses 2 meters of rope as an ADSL line

We’ve all been in that situation: you have to build an ADSL line, but all you have is a piece of wet rope. Don’t worry though, it has now finally been officially shown that this is all you need for a 3.5Mb/s line.

A technician from the British internet provider Andrews & Arnold decided to MacGyver everything in the office, since ‘it is always said that ADSL even works over a piece of wet rope’. And guess what? That made no sense at all. There was no rope to tie. “It took salt water before anything happened,” the author continues. That’s a pretty good conductor of electricity. At the other end of the spectrum, distilled water is almost an insulator. The technician was fortunately not to be caught.

His setup eventually managed to achieve a speed of 3.5Mb/s with a 2 meter rope. Characteristic of the ADSL technology is that it can adapt in speed to the length and quality of the line in order to prevent errors. Since the line is very short and the speed still remains low, so the not entirely surprising conclusion can be drawn that a piece of wet, salty rope will in any case not soon knock the old, trusted copper line from its throne, but you can keep hoping .

Hopefully salt water won’t stain carpets
