Tech giants pledge to cut ties with suppliers through forced labor
Tech companies Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Google have pledged to cut ties with companies that use forced labor. That happened during a hearing of the directors of the tech companies in the US Congress.
All four directors pledged to cut ties if companies found that they were using forced labor. Congressman Ken Buck urged the directors on the pledge. The promise stems from reports that dozens of large companies are using producers who have Uyghur forced laborers. This was stated in the report Uyghurs For Sale from the International Cyber Policy Center.
Since the directors were under oath at the hearing, they are presumed to keep their promise. It is still unknown what that will mean, because the companies have links with suppliers who work with Uyghur forced laborers.
Apple’s Tim Cook, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Sundar Pichai of Google parent Alphabet testify in a U.S. Congressional hearing on their market power and abuse of monopoly positions Wednesday night.
