Team Fortress 2 will receive its first major update in six years this summer
Valve will release another update for Team Fortress 2 this summer. The gaming company underlines that it won’t just be an update for a limited-time event, but that there will be new items, levels, taunts, skins and ‘who knows what else’.
In a cheerful blog post Valve is calling it an ‘update-sized update’ and is calling on mod makers to submit their Steam Workshop creations before May 1 so they may become part of the game starting with this update. Valve has been doing that with this game for more than a decade. Last month, TF2 repos were leaked, containing never-before-seen content, such as a Level 4 Sentry. It is unknown whether that is part of the upcoming update.
It will be the first time in a long time that Valve has released an update for its 2007 multiplayer shooter. The last major update that wasn’t a recurring seasonal event was Jungle Inferno, back in 2017. Although the game has received little attention from its developer, it remains as popular as ever. At the time of writing, almost 100,000 people are playing the game. This means that the game currently ranks seventh on the list of most played Steam games at the moment.
The Team Fortress 2 community is also one that is trying to keep itself alive. Last year, the #SaveTF2 campaign was set up to draw Valve’s attention to the then major problem of lagbots. These are bots that could cause a game server to stagnate using a DDoS-like technique. Valve responded to the campaign.
Team Fortress 2 was part of The Orange Box, a game package that consisted of this game, Half-Life 2 Episode 2 and the first Portal. The package won many game-of-the-year awards at the time.
