Team Fortress 2 is getting its first major update in six years this summer
Valve will release another update for Team Fortress 2 this summer. The game company underlines that it will not be just an update for a limited time event, but that there will be new items, levels, taunts, skins and ‘who knows what else’.
In a jolly blog post Valve calls it an “update format update” and calls on modmakers to submit their Steam Workshop creations by May 1, so they may become part of the game starting with this update. Valve has been doing that with this game for over a decade. Last month, repos of TF2 leaked containing never-before-seen content, such as a Level 4 Sentry. It is unknown if that is part of the upcoming update.
It will be the first time in a long time that Valve has released an update to its 2007 multiplayer shooter. The last major update that wasn’t a recurring seasonal event was Jungle Inferno, from 2017. Although the game has received little attention from its developer, it remains as popular as ever. At the time of writing, almost 100,000 people are playing the game. This puts the game in seventh place on the list of most played Steam games at the moment.
The Team Fortress 2 community is also one that tries to keep itself alive. Last year, the #SaveTF2 campaign was set up to draw Valve’s attention to the big problem of lagbots at the time. These are bots that could stagnate a game server with a ddos-like technique. Valve complied with the campaign.
Team Fortress 2 was part of The Orange Box, a game pack that included this game, Half-Life 2 Episode 2, and the first Portal. The package won many game-of-the-year awards at the time.
