TCL has announced the Nxtpaper, a tablet with an 8.88″ LCD without backlight. According to the manufacturer, there are no flickers and blue light in the display, which would be better for the eyes of the user.

TCL announced last year that it had developed a reflective-coated screen for tablets, and at the CES 2021 virtual electronics show, the company is now announcing its first product with this LCD: the NXtpaper Tablet. It is a tablet with an 8.88-inch screen with an IPS panel and a resolution of 1440×1080 pixels. The absence of a backlight makes the tablet relatively light: 316 grams.

Consumption is also potentially lower. TCL does not give details about this, except that the tablet with its 5500mAh battery ‘lasts a full day’. The company emphasizes the absence of flicker and blue light. As with e-readers without a backlight, ambient light is needed to read the screen. Due to the technology used, the brightness is lower than with traditional LCDs. According to TCL, the screen can be compared to an LCD at a very low brightness setting.

The dimensions of the Nxtpaper are 203.76×150.77×7.45 mm. The processor is the MediaTek octacore MT8768E and there is 4GB of ram and 64GB of storage on the device. The operating system is Android 10. The Nxtpaper will be available in Europe from April for 349 euros.
