Tamron will release an 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 lens for Sony cameras with APS-C sensor and E mount on September 24. The zoom lens has optical image stabilization and a housing that is sealed against dust and moisture.

The full name of the lens is Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD and it is the first 18-300mm lens for Sony’s E-mount mirrorless cameras. The zoom lens is suitable for cameras from the Sony A6000 series. The range on those cameras is equivalent to 27-450mm on a full-frame camera.

Tamron equips the zoom lens with its Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive, or VXD. That is an autofocus mechanism that should enable fast and quiet focusing. The minimum focus distance is 99cm when zoomed in to the maximum; zoomed out it is 15 cm. The abbreviation VC stands for Vibration Compensation, which is Tamron’s implementation of optical image stabilization.

The lens has dimensions of 75.5×125.6mm, a filter thread of 67mm and a weight of 620 grams. The optical construction consists of 19 lens elements in 15 groups and the housing is provided with seals against moisture and dust. The front lens has a moisture-resistant fluorine coating.

Tamron has been making comparable lenses for SLR cameras for some time and is also working on a variant for Fujifilm cameras with an X mount, but when it will be released is not yet known. According to importer Transcontinenta, the Sony version is available from September 24 for 750 euros.
