Take-Two: GTA Remasters Are Selling Much Better Than Expected
According to Take-Two, the bundle of Grand Theft Auto remasters released last year has exceeded sales expectations. The publisher will not disclose how many copies have been sold. The remasters received a lot of criticism from players and reviewers.
“We have some quality issues. We’ve been trying to fix them and more updates are coming,” Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick told Gamesindustry.biz about the remasters. In the presentation of its quarterly results, Take-Two writes that the games have “considerably exceeded” commercial expectations.
It is not known exactly what those expectations were. Take-Two does not mention sales figures for the remasters. It can be deduced from the total sales of GTA games that a maximum of about 10 million copies of the remasters have been sold. Zelnick emphasizes that the company is “very satisfied” with how often the games have been sold. Speaking of the issues, he says: “I think we were all a little disappointed with the quality at first. We’re grateful that most of the issues have been resolved, but there’s still more work to be done.”
The quarterly figures were slightly higher than in the same period last year and according to Take-Two that is partly due to Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. Take-Two had quarterly revenue of $903 million in the last three months of 2021. A year earlier, that was $861 million. 61 percent of revenues came from recurring consumer spending. Such recurring releases include in-game purchases. A year earlier, it was 64 percent.
Take-Two also provides an update on sales numbers of its major game franchises. GTA V has now been delivered more than 160 million times. That is 5 million more than a quarter earlier. The GTA games thus add up to 370 million units. Red Dead Redemption 2 has now been delivered 43 million times. That is an increase of 4 million copies compared to the previous quarter.
