Take-Two delivered 20 million copies of GTA V last year, a total of 140 million
Take-Two says sales of Grand Theft Auto V last year were the best since the game’s release in 2013. The publisher shipped an additional 20 million copies in the past year, bringing the total to 140 million.
When discussing the quarterly results, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick says that GTA V has fared better in the past calendar year than in all other years, except in 2013 when the game came out. He says that more copies were sold in 2020 than in the other years and that the total now stands at more than 140 million copies.
At the beginning of last year, the number of copies of GTA V delivered was still 120 million, which shows that Take-Two delivered another 20 million copies last year. GTA V was available for free through the Epic Games Store in May last year. It is not known how many copies were given away, nor is it clear whether Take-Two will count that giveaway in the deliveries. Although Epic gave the game away for free, Take-Two probably got money for it.
The success of GTA V continues because of GTA Online, which also makes Take-Two a lot of money from in-game purchases. In addition, a new version of GTA V will be released next year, with improvements for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.
Red Dead Redemption 2 has shipped 36 million units to date and Borderlands 3 shipments have reached 12 million units. Take-Two’s revenue in the last three months of last year was $ 861 million. That was seven percent less than a year earlier. 62 percent of sales came from player recurring spending. This concerns, for example, expenditure on DLC and items in games.
