The Tails project released Tails 5.0. The privacy-focused operating system is based on Debian 11 bullseye and uses a new OpenPGP tool, Kleopatra, among other things. Also, a lot of software has been updated to a newer version.

One of the main changes of the new operating system is that both the OpenPGP software and ‘Passwords and keys’ will be replaced by one new tool. That’s the existing software Kleopatra. This makes it possible to store passwords and PGP keys. Furthermore, the new OS is based on Debian 11. That version, bullseye, is the most recent version of the distro. The new version also makes it easier to install new software in the persistent part of the OS, so that users can install software right away when setting up Tails and don’t have to do it afterwards.

The creators have also updated a lot of software in the OS to the new version. The Tor browser, Gnome, metadata cleaner MAT and software such as LibreOffice, GIMP and the Disk Utility have been updated. The developers warn that users of version 4.x cannot upgrade automatically. They have to do a manual upgrade via their USB stick.
