System Software Update Causes Broken Wiis – Update

Updating the Wii system software to version 4.2 may result in a malfunctioning console. The update combats the use of unsupported applications, but also hurts users of Wiis without the Homebrew Channel software.

Out posts users on various forums have found that the new version of the system software for the Wii sometimes results in a malfunctioning console. While downloading the software, the progress bar hangs and after a reboot of the console it will not start again. This would be the modification of the program ‘boot2’ as the cause to have.

Nintendo has made no major changes with version 4.2 of the Wii system software. Officially, the update is only intended to improve the ‘overall performance’. However, after further analysis, it has become apparent that Nintendo is particularly interested in helping users of the so-called ‘Homebrew Channel‘ to thwart. Users who have the Homebrew Channel software installed on their Wii can run third-party applications on their machine and they are not supported by Nintendo.

Update, 11:48 AM: A Nintendo employee turns out have promised that victims with an unmodified Wii can have their affected console repaired by Nintendo free of charge.
