Synology Shows NAS That Can Transcode 4K Video in Real Time

Synology presented the successors of the DS214play and the DS414 at the IFA in Berlin. One of the new devices, the so-called DS216play, can transcode real-time 4k material.

The DS216play runs on a dual-core processor from STMicroelectronics, which is clocked at 1.5GHz and has two Cortex-A9 cores. The device also offers 1GB of ddr3 memory and can transcode h.265 video in real time, allowing videos to be displayed directly on another device over the network. That reports the German Computerbase.

According to Synology, the two-bay DS216play offers up to 16TB of storage. The NAS consumes 6.83W in sleep mode, but it is not known how much it consumes when someone requests data. The Synology also offers DLNA support, AES256 encryption and a USB 2.0 and a USB 3.0 port. An SD card reader, unlike the DS214play, is not included. The price is therefore lower than the predecessor at 215 euros.

In addition, Synology showed the bigger brother of the DS216play at the IFA, namely the DS416. With the Annapurna AL-212-soc at 1.4Ghz, it offers a read speed of 220MB/s and a write speed of 139MB/s. In addition, the device would respond less slowly with hardware encryption thanks to the Annapurna. The DS416 also offers four bays, three USB 3.0 ports and two LAN connections. The device is said to cost 385 euros.
