Synology Releases DS416slim-nas with space for four 2.5″ drives
With the DS416slim, Synology is launching a relatively small 4-bay NAS. The dimensions are limited because the network storage enclosure only fits 2.5″ HDDs or SSDs. The maximum storage capacity is 8TB when using hard drives.
The Synology DS416slim has a Marvell Armada 385 88F682 processor, a 32-bit dual-core with a speed of 1GHz. There is 512MB DDR3 RAM and the housing has two gigabit Ethernet connections. The second connection can be used to deal with interference, or for link aggregation, where both ports are used for data transfer. According to Synology, the read speed is 170MB/s and the write speed is 78MB/s. When using a single network connection, the read speed is 113MB/s, the manufacturer does not mention the speed at which writing is possible.
There is room for four 2.5″ HDDs with a maximum height of 12.5mm. Because such HDDs are not available with storage capacities of more than 2TB per drive, the maximum capacity of the NAS is 8TB. That is relatively little compared to 4-bay NAS that accept 3.5″ HDDs. These go up to a maximum of 32TB when using four 8TB HDDs. However, measuring 120x105x142mm, the DS416slim is a lot smaller than such NAS systems. The device weighs 660 grams and is cooled by a 60x60x10mm fan. At full use, according to Synology, the power consumption is on average 17.17 watts. The NAS has a USB 3.0 connection on the front and back.
The NAS runs on Synology’s DiskStation Manager software, which the company released version 6.0 on Thursday. There is support for raid 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, jbod and Synology Hybrid Raid, where HDDs of different capacities can be combined.
According to Synology, the DS416slim is available immediately for a suggested retail price of 313.39 euros.
