Synology Releases DS216 NAS for Small Offices
Synology has released a new NAS that is suitable for use in small office environments and departments. The DS216 is a 2bay NAS with a Marvell Armada processor that runs at 1.3GHz in combination with 512MB DDR3 memory.
The Marvell Armada 385 dual-core is more powerful than the Marvell Armada XP MV78230 of the predecessor in the Value Series, the DS214. To relieve the CPU, support for hardware encryption is available. The NAS is running DiskStation Manager and the file system for the internal drives is ext4. The DS216 can hold up to two 8TB drives for a total storage capacity of 16TB. The drive trays are hot-swappable.
The DS216 has a button on the front that copies the contents of a USB stick directly to the NAS, but that button works in combination with a USB 2.0 port on the front. At the back are two USB 3.0 ports and a gigabit Ethernet interface.
The DS216 measures 165x108x233.2mm and weighs 1.3kg. During use, the NAS consumes 15.48W and 7.2W in sleep mode. The NAS is available immediately and costs 288.20 euros.
