Synology has released a beta version of its DiskStation Manager firmware. New is Note Station, a tool for centrally storing and sharing notes. Cloud Station now works with more cloud storage services and tools such as File Station and Video Station have been adapted.

Note Station in the beta of DSM 5.1, like tools like Evernote, makes it possible to store notes in a central place, in this case on a Synology NAS. The web interface allows users to add notes, including images. Multiple users can also share notes and version control is available to revert changes. Synology also states that notes can be stored encrypted.

In addition to Note Station, Synology has also released the DS note mobile app. The tool, available for iOS and Android, allows you to create and edit notes on a mobile device. There is an offline mode available to continue working without an internet connection.

The Cloud Station tool allows data stored on the NAS to be synchronized with a number of cloud providers. In DSM 5.0, Google Drive, Dropbox and Baidu Cloud were already supported. Synology has added Box, OneDrive and hubiC in DSM 5.1. In addition, the backup tool provides access to Microsoft Azure, SFR and hicloud. Amazon’s public cloud services were already supported.

File Manager File Station has an integrated email client to quickly send files as attachments. Links can also be generated to share files with others and files can be uploaded via ftp, sftp and webdav.

Video Station provides a link to subtitle service Opensubtitles and Shooter.cn, and the user can quickly see which movies he has already watched and which have been added. Videos can also be shared with others by means of links and the overview screen offers three viewing modes. Music application Audio Station has improved search and playlist sharing, while Photo Station offers more transition effects and soundtrack option when displaying slideshows.

DSM 5.1 can show system notifications via push notifications in Chrome and Safari browsers. Synology also says that the SSD caching mechanism can now be viewed via the Storage Manager. Furthermore, the read cache on suitable NAS models can now also work with only an SSD, and all applications and services from DSM and the additional mobile apps are compatible with ipv6. Finally, the new Security Advisor promises improved security of NAS data, including by enabling automatic firmware upgrades.

The beta of DSM 5.1 can be installed on all Synology NAS systems with “11” or higher in the model number. Also, DSM 5.0 should already be running as firmware.
